- Tenure/Life Period: July 15, 1903 – October 2, 1975
- Association and Role within Society or Entity: Chief Minister of Madras State; Chief Policy Architect of the Tamil Nadu Agro-Industrial Co-operative Networks.
- Contributions to the Cooperative Sector: Born in the Virudhunagar district, Kamaraj utilized the cooperative model as a primary engine for state-wide agricultural development, rural electrification, and poverty eradication. During his tenure as Chief Minister in the 1950s and 1960s, his administration passed policies that gave registered cooperative societies a preferred legal status in public procurement, civil construction, and commodity distribution. He authorized massive state equity investments to set up cooperative sugar mills, spinning mills, and land development banks across districts like Salem, Madurai, and Tiruchirappalli. This structural shift ensured that the economic benefits of processing raw cash crops were shared directly with the rural farming communities who held shares in these processing units.
- Awards and Recognitions: Posthumously awarded India's highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, in 1976 for his monumental lifetime contributions to public education, industrial planning, and rural development.
