Lallubhai Samaldas Mehta
  • Association and Role within Society or Entity: Founder and inaugural President of the Bombay Provincial Co-operative Bank; and member of the Imperial Legislative Council.
  • Contributions to the Cooperative Sector: As a pre-independence pioneer, Lallubhai was instrumental in drafting early provincial frameworks following the enactment of the British administration's Cooperative Credit Societies Act of 1904. He worked to establish rural cooperative credit networks across the undivided Bombay Presidency, Gujarat, and parts of Rajasthan.
  • By setting up alternative, low-interest agricultural banking lines, he saved heavily debt-ridden farming communities from the systemic trap of ancestral debt peonage. He heavily advocated for the industrialization of agriculture through collective asset ownership, pushing for farmers to jointly purchase processing tools and warehousing units to protect their post-harvest margins.
  • Awards and Recognitions: Knighted by the British administration in 1926 for his monumental contributions to public welfare, economic planning, and cooperative banking across western India.
