Shripad Subbarao Talmaki is celebrated as the "Father of the Urban Cooperative Housing and Credit Movement" in Western India. He pioneered the urban cooperative housing model and established early consumer and thrift societies in Mumbai.

- Urban Thrift & Banking: Founded the Shamrao Vithal Co-operative Bank to protect low-income urban workers and salaried employees from predatory moneylenders.
