Thiru. R. Kanagasabai
  • Tenure/Life Period: November 14, 1922 – June 2, 1999
  • Association and Role within Society or Entity: Chairman of the Thanjavur Co-operative Marketing Society and long-time Director of TNSC Bank.
  • Contributions to the Cooperative Sector: Based in the Thanjavur district (the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu), Kanagasabai was a major force behind the creation of a massive network of cooperative grain storage warehouses and modern rice mills. He designed a unique financial model that allowed paddy farmers to store their harvests in cooperative warehouses during post-harvest gluts, secure instant low-interest loans against their stored grain, and sell their produce later when market prices improved. This framework prevented distress sales and gave smallholder farmers real bargaining power in agricultural trading.
  • Awards and Recognitions: Recipient of the state's Senior Cooperator Leadership Award in 1989 for his contributions to agricultural warehouse development.
