India’s leading dairy cooperative brand Amul is expanding its presence in the United States through Costco stores, adopting a local production model to serve American consumers.
The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets Amul products, entered into a partnership with the Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) in 2024 to introduce fresh Amul milk in the U.S. market.
Under the arrangement, the milk is produced locally using milk supplied by MMPA’s member dairy farmers and processed through its existing dairy infrastructure. Amul contributes its brand and product formulations, allowing the cooperative dairy brand to maintain its product identity while sourcing milk locally rather than exporting finished milk products from India.
Several Amul milk variants are now available in the U.S., including Amul Gold, containing 6% milk fat, along with Shakti, Taaza and Slim n Trim.
Amul Gold was introduced at Costco stores in 2024 and has subsequently expanded its availability in the American market. The initiative represents a model in which an Indian cooperative brand combines its established product identity with local dairy production and farmer networks in an international market.
The partnership between GCMMF and MMPA marks another step in Amul’s international expansion, bringing its dairy products to American consumers while utilising milk sourced from local dairy farmers.
