NCEL and Sri Lanka’s COOPFED Sign MoU to Strengthen Cooperative Trade

New Delhi/Colombo: The National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL) and Sri Lanka’s COOPFED have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening cooperation in the supply of essential food commodities from India to Sri Lanka.

The agreement seeks to facilitate a stable and uninterrupted supply of essential food products to the Sri Lankan market while opening new avenues for trade and commercial cooperation between cooperative institutions in the two countries.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Sri Lanka’s Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Sant Jha and India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha.

The partnership is expected to support the availability of essential commodities for Sri Lankan consumers while creating opportunities for Indian and Sri Lankan cooperatives to engage in broader trade activities.

The agreement also highlights the expanding role of cooperative institutions in cross-border commerce and economic partnerships. By connecting cooperative organisations involved in production, procurement and distribution, the initiative aims to build stronger institutional links between the two countries.

The collaboration is aligned with India’s “Sahkar Se Samriddhi” (Prosperity through Cooperation) vision, which promotes cooperatives as important drivers of economic development and market expansion.

The MoU marks another step towards strengthening cooperative-led trade between India and Sri Lanka, with potential to expand cooperation beyond essential commodities in the future.
